River trip!

Last week, we made it out to our beloved San Marcos river for just an overnight trip. It’s not but about 2 hours from home, and we use points for the hotel, so we can keep the cost down. Just gas and food need purchased (which are not cheap anymore!).

We hadn’t been to the river since last September. Before that, we were making the trip 3-4 times a year easily. But, the pandemic has thrown us off. It’s ok. We’re very grateful to head back when we can.

We take Newton and LuAnn with us every single time. This makes my mom’s Granimal-sitting at the a little easier! This time around, we added Pico to our travel crew. He did waaay better than I suspected he would, so he may make the team for next time!

It was nice to get back to the river. On a Tuesday, it wasn’t too busy at first. We rolled in about 12:30 p.m. and luckily found a parking spot close to our favorite area to go along the river. After walking down and setting up our 2 chairs, we all jumped in. This river is spring fed and a consistent 72 degrees no matter what the outside elements are at the time. It’s amazing!

The river was a nice respite to the heat we’ve been having since May. We spent the evening back at the river, and a few hours the next day as well before we headed home.

While I did attend the local university my freshman year of college located near the river, I never knew about the special nooks we found about 5 years ago when we went to a friend’s wedding in the area. Since then, we return again and again and are never disappointed.

Going to San Marcos and making the trip, staying overnight, it’s been something I could and can do even when I’ve been pretty ill or I guess I could say even if/when I’m in a flare. It’s served as a place I can go and just be. It gets me out of the house, out of the day to day struggle of chronic illness in a way I haven’t found in many other ways. I get to see my husband happy – he loves the river, too- and the pups have fun.

I’m hoping we can make one more trip up to our favorite place this next week before we head back to start the new school year and to celebrate my husband’s upcoming birthday. Fingers crossed!

I hope you all are having a good summer and that it’s not so hot in your part of the world.

Do you have a favorite or special place you like to visit?

Take care! Peace-B

  1. We like to visit the Everglades and go on a car trip there. My next vacation during Christmas, we are probably going to do a trip in interior Florida and visit smaller towns like Apalachicola florida.

  2. So glad you enjoyed your trip and what beautiful doggies too. It’s always great to have a special place to return to and being by water is soothing and relaxing for body and mind.

    • Hi there. It’s a great place we can enjoy and the dogs love as there is a place they can easily get in and out and there are shallow spots they like in the river, too. Pico our Chihuahua maybe doesn’t like it as much as the bigger hounds, but he didn’t hate it!

    • Hi! I’m sure you all are dealing with the exact same up where you are! What a summer! Too hot. I hope you’re getting some relief somehow. We went to see in-laws in June and it was truly difficult to come home to these temps. But, I mean, I guess we can say we’re about halfway through it now? 😜 Depends on how September decides to behave!

  3. There’s a San Marcos in California, but it looks nothing like this. Way to go, Pico! You made the first team!

  4. Can you believe I’ve never been to San Marcos, or the river there? The Guadalupe and the Frio are my pleasures, but they’re a little far for a weekend. I’m so glad you were able to get away, and that the pups enjoyed it, too. It’s so beastly hot that rivers are the right choice. The Gulf and Galveston Bay waters are just too warm now to enjoy, although it’s not stopping people from coming down to the beaches!

    • Oh, I’m sure you would love it! I’ve never been to the Frio, but I’ve heard it’s great, too! Yes, it’s still so hot, as you know! They said we’ll get a little break here with a chilly 98 on Tuesday and Wednesday. 😉 My husband suggested we go to Galveston next week in late afternoon/evening since we haven’t been to the beach in years, but I’m thinking we should wait. I do love a beach now and then but like you said, it’s so warm right now! I hope you’re staying cool!

      • If you do go, the evenings would be fine. The one suggestion I’d offer is that you avoid the beaches in Galveston proper and head farther down the island to the west end. Just before you get to San Luis pass, beach access 40, down by the Pointe West Resort, offers paved parking, a long boardwalk over the dunes, and almost no people. It’s one of my favorites.

    • Thank you! The world does seem to stop when we’re at our favorite little nook in Texas (so far). I hope your Sunday is going well and that it’s not too hot where you are!

  6. Our relief came yesterday as a cold front came through and pushed all the heat out. After a week of 90 plus each day we’re headed for a nighttime temp of 69 and we’ll take it! Stiil, we’ve been lucky in PA this year compared to the rest of the world. Special place – we sometimes head to Princeton NJ to shop, see a show, sightsee. Old college town with an awful lot of charm. Urban, but civilized urban if you know what I mean. Glad you enjoyed your time by the river!
