Quick Check-In

I’m not really sure where April went. I kept thinking I would catch up at some point, but that never happened.

It just kept rolling and here we are, just a mere 7 days until school is out for the summer. Yahoo!

I finished up the college grades and checkout last Friday. I thought I would feel relief, and while I did somewhat, but allergies attacked. I think between that and just being exhausted, I spent much of last weekend in bed. I barely cleaned the house which is unlike me. J cleaned some and I was able to get laundry done, but not much more than that! I’m just really trying not to push myself too hard, then end up spending all summer trying to recover just to head back to work in August.

I’ve been tempted to do a couple of summer gigs just for some extra cash. Summer school apps came and went. Then, state testing offers. “It’s just 4-5 days” I told myself. Then, an offer to teach Scholars. That was very tempting. But this is 3 weeks in summer, four Saturdays, and several after school sessions.

But I know better. I’ve learned the hard way over the years that pushing the gas with chronic fatigue is just not a good idea. It still stings some though, I won’t lie. I used to do some summer gigs, either for high school or  at the college. And I enjoyed doing those as well.

Right now though, working for the summer just isn’t in my best interest healthwise. I’m grateful that I do have the option of not working this summer (that hasn’t always been the case).

These next few days will be filled with finishing up high school grades, signing exemptions, and celebrating the end of the school year with my students with lots of laughter and pride.

Next week will be finals. It will be fairly quiet with only a few students per class period required to take the exam. Most of my juniors exempted, and they will start their summer early. They deserve it!

Hopefully, I can blog more this summer. And read more. Oh yeah, and deep clean the house. *wink, wink *nudge nudge*

Take care my friends. Will write soon. Counting down to May 26th!

  2. Congrats on making it almost to the finish line. You’re right, the year did just fly by. Elementary school is nearing its end too. It just flew by.

You are wise to not sign up for anything this summer. The extra cash is most certainly appealing but self care and rest are also so important. You’re almost there and enjoy that summer break!

    • Hi AB, does it feel like time goes so much faster as an adult than it did as a kid? I feel like this year went by so quickly; it feels like we just had Thanksgiving! I hope you and hubs and T had a great school year! From what you’ve shared on your blog, T has had a good year making lots of progress along the way! I’m hoping once I have the time to reflect, I’ll see the same for myself and for my students. Hope your week is going well. Happy hump day!

  3. At first I thought your school year was ending very, very early. Then I remembered that we used to finish before Memorial Day — and Memorial Day almost is here! You’re wise not to push on through the summer. Even enjoyable work takes an energy toll; we don’t always feel it while working, but after the fact? There it is. Extra money’s always good, but poor health is too high a cost!

    • This spring just zipped by, didn’t it? The past several years we’ve gone into the first week of June, but somehow this year, we’re out before Memorial day weekend, yippee! It seems to make the summer feel longer even though it really isn’t LOL How’s your neck of the woods with all of this rain? Our yard is spongy with water and some areas are flooded, but everything is so lush and green right now!

  4. A summer that is more r&r and less work sounds like the perfect thing. You’re wise to listen to your body! I hope your summer is magical.

  5. Hi, Belle! Yes, yes, yes. Even though those opportunities for summer work are alluring, I remember feeling the push/pull about it, too. I wanted to…but sometimes I had the presence of mind (and body) to pull back. I love that you’ve landed there…and with just a few days to go to wrap up another academic year you can look ahead to refueling and enjoying a well-deserved break. Sending hugs! 🥰🥰🥰

    • Hi Vicki, today, I went back through my emails to clean out the clutter and was a bit tempted again to take on just one summer job, but me and myself had a little conversation (again!) about what it would really mean and the time and energy it would entail. You describe it perfectly as a push/pull feeling! It’s a tug of war for sure! I’m grateful that my brain thinks I might be able to manage something but I’m glad my body won out and said “not today” 🙂

  6. I totally understand. Right now I am weighing my options for teaching in person next year. My hip this morning was very painful but I keep moving forward with PT, virtual yoga, and walking. Arthritis is very painful. I am worried about returning but wanted to teach a few more years in person before retiring in my early 60’s. I still work online at home which does keep me busy but being ill or having any kind of disability is so hard on the spirit and with teaching. I do sometimes miss my students in person and my colleagues. A school is keeping a spot open for me, so I shall weigh in again later how I am doing. Doing my best to keep up.

    • Hi Cupcake 🙂 I remember you saying you’d have a decision to make. I’m glad there’s a spot holding for you. That is always nice to know and hopefully makes your decision less stressful. I’m sorry your hip is hurting so much. You’ve been working so hard with the PT and stretches to try to mitigate the pain! I hope it lets up for you soon. Like you, right now, I’d like to get my 25 years in (3 more to go) and then play it by ear. As I get older, it definitely is getting harder physically to keep it up, but I’ve learned to just take it day by day. Sending you some ❤️!

      • Good for you. I came to teaching later in life as a career changer. Now I work as an online adjunct with a college but yes, I have been told there is still a place for me. Good school. I know you are a little younger than me!!

I hope you will have the opportunity to read my book this summer. One of my online virtual tai chi teachers with the VA has lyme disease. She is only in her 30s and a runner. She really struggles. It is good I have this venue to meet people with similar problems. Eventually a hip replacement might be the answer but we shall see. Maybe I will sell many books and be able to have my second job as a full time author.

      • It sounds like you’ve enjoyed the online adjunct gig. At some point, I’d like to get into that myself. I’m so impressed that you already had a whole other career before teaching. So awesome. I started teaching at about 30 years old, so I still have some time to put in before I retire. I’ve set my goal for 25 years because that’s definitely doable I think with the illness stuff, but if I can manage a few more years effectively, that would be cool, too. I’m definitely getting your book for my summer reading stack! Can’t wait to dive in! I feel for the young lady you know who is dealing with Lyme disease. I hope she’s able to find treatment that works for her. ❤️

      • Thanks! She has a great outlook. I hope you and your husband enjoy the summer. It has been nice to be home with my husband since Feb. My leave ends in June. I would suggest you try to find online gigs in Texas as this is the easiest regarding taxes and other things. You are most likely to be hired by a private college in your state for online. I did get lucky and have been with them for 4 years now. Sometimes you get lucky! Hang in there!

      • I hope you two have a great summer as well! I already teach dual credit at the high school so the community college I work for (too) is now offering so many online classes since COVID I’m pretty sure I can get on with them at some point. I just don’t think I can juggle the online plus face to face right now. Thanks for the tips! I might have to ask you more questions as I ease into it! 🙂

  8. Thank you for sharing!!.. 🙂

Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
to paint a picture, or write a letter,
bake a cake, or plant a seed.
Ponder the difference between want and need.

Dust if you must, but there is not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb!
Music to hear, and books to read,
friends to cherish and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world’s out there
with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
a flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
this day will not come round again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go, and go you must,
you, yourself, will make more dust!
    (Rose Milligan)

Hope life is all that you wish for it to be and until we meet again..
May the dreams you hold dearest
    Be those which come true
    May the kindness you spread
    Keep returning to you
