Summer 2019

When summer started, I needed a couple of weeks to decompress. I was wiped out completely by the very last day of work – teacher workday. My brain was not working well at all, and I was having some medium to severe lower back pain and right hip pain. As I walked out of our campus doors on May 31st, I wasn’t sure what the summer would hold for me healthwise.

I had 2 goals for this summer: get off of the sleep meds I’ve been taking for several years and to try and add some exercise to my daily routine. I stopped taking the sleep medication immediately. I’m not going to lie, it was really tough the first week or so. I would go to sleep and then I would keep waking up almost every half hour to hour most of the night. I almost caved in before things started looking up.

My sleep had not been improving on the sleep medication this spring at all. In fact, insomnia is now one of the lingering symptoms I am dealing with as far as the chronic Lyme is concerned. I spoke to my in-town doctor about this at my June visit, but remember, she takes insurance and if I am lucky, I get about 8-10 minutes with her. It is impossible to discuss much in that short of a time frame. And at this appointment, I wanted to focus on the deep hip pain I’ve been having since February so that was the topic of our brief visit. Let’s just say she didn’t help me with that either and leave it at that.

I really wanted to use the summer to try and get a regular, good sleep pattern back if at all possible. So I endured. I haven’t taken a Lunesta since June 1st. I do take time released melatonin and Valerian Root before bed and a supplement of DIM my out-of-town doctor suggested. I’m not saying I haven’t had some tough nights. I have. But overall, I’ve been pretty happy with the results of stopping the medication. While I still wake up a few times every night, I’m able to get back to sleep most of the time.

I’m sincerely not sure what I will do if, once back at work, I can’t sleep well. Not sleeping well for weeks and/or months at a time is just so horrible for me on so many levels (for anyone really!), that I will probably have to go back to Lunesta or ask my doctor for a different sleep med if that happens. I won’t make it if I can’t sleep. I am sincerely keeping my fingers crossed that I can maintain my sleep naturally!

My other goal this summer was to add a bit of exercise if possible. Before Lyme, I liked to walk 2 miles a day and do yoga. I always had a strong energy level so I could do these before school or after school. But these past 6 years, I just have not had the energy to do anything. Even just working has been a serious challenge for me. When summer started, I added 30 minutes 5xs a week on the elliptical machine I’ve had sitting around for years LOL. Oh dear God, the first 2 weeks were not fun, my friends. Wow. I knew I was out of shape but DAMN! But I have been able to continue this workout 5xs a week all summer! I am so happy about this! I want to be optimistic and say that yes, I will continue once I head back to work August 12th, but I just don’t know. I need to be realistic. Look, I am going to try. That’s all I can do.

To be honest, I haven’t done a lot this summer. We went to the river 3-4 times this summer which is always great but otherwise, I just did some cleaning at home and enjoyed the time off. Oh, plus a few doctor visits! My hip has been killing me so I am trying to figure that out. That’s for another post though.

When I was first diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease, now almost 4 years ago, I thought I knew what it was all about. You get bit by a tick, you might get sick, and then you are treated and cured quickly. HAHAHA!  Little did I know! So once I began researching this crazy and unpredictable disease, I began realizing that there is no CURE. That in many cases, including mine, Lyme cannot be merely treated with 14-28 days of oral antibiotics. Not even. And I began to understand, especially after being sick 6 – 12 months, that I was going to have to try out some unconventional, non-Western medicine options, to treat this bacterial infection.

I had been hearing and reading about CBD oil long before I decided to try it out. Information was mixed but the one common denominator seemed to be QUALITY of the product. Yet, I had no idea where to even begin. My first foray into the CBD sphere was, and now regrettably, a product I found and purchased from a seller on Craigslist. I know, I know. Believe me, I really was clueless, and in my Lyme social circle, no one had a recommendation for me. But I knew that I wanted to try this option. No Bueno. Honestly, I think there was turpentine in it. I tried to take it a few times, but the taste was just so disgusting, I could barely gag it down.

I have tried both of these roots before in the past with some positive effects, but not at the same time and not as a part of a CBD Oil mix. When my product arrived, I was really excited to give it a shot!

Recently, I have also started taking a drop when I wake up during the night. Doing this has been beneficial in helping me get back to sleep and to stay asleep throughout the night!

Look, HoneyColony products are top-quality products! Yes, the price is higher, but again, the QUALITY is worth every penny. Sleep, Perchance to….?

Hi all, these past few weeks, I’ve been having more issues than usual with sleep. Like getting enough of it. Lyme affects the brain, Lyme encephalopathy, we call it Lyme brain for giggles, and it messes with the brain and the central nervous system. In my case, memory, especially short-term memory, and sleep cycles are giving me hell right now. Since the time went forward at the beginning of march, and we do this again, why? sleeping has been choppy. Also, a few weeks ago, I had to go without one of my sleep aids for about 10 days because the insurance company had to reauthorize it or such. Don’t even get me started on that little fiasco.

So, I can go for days where I sleep well, you know, getting in those 8-10 hours of pure bliss. But then things can go array very quickly. Example. Last week due to disasterous flooding in our city, schools were closed all week. Free for all sleeping. No alarms. I tried my best to stay on schedule. Sunday, I forced myself to rise at 5 a.m. the usual work time. Then, I went to bed about 7:30 p.m.! Anyhoo, this is getting boring; moving on. Tuesday night I woke up at 2 a.m. nauseated. Headache. I got up to take something for my tummy and it was all downhill from there. I tossed and turned until my sickly sweet toned alarm sounded. I felt sick all day. It was terrible. Home, chores, rest. Then, I couldn’t sleep. Ugh! Double Ugh! I guess I finally drifted off about 8:45 p.m. Let’s just say I didn’t want to wake up at 3:45 this morning, yet, hello!

I do take some sleeping medications. Believe me, it doesn’t make me happy to take them but it is a necessity. I have to. Before I was diagnosed, sleeping was at best a few hours at a time. Without meds, I wake up every few hours, usually due to joint pain. Without meds, I wasn’t able to get any real deep sleep, and it was a killer. Not sleeping well exacerbates all other symptoms. Anyway, I am hoping that I can get a solid night’s sleep here as soon as possible. Yesterday and today I’m running on fumes. I can’t concentrate; I can’t think. It ain’t good.
